Custom Fabrication Case Study: How It All Started

How a featured story in the Dallas Morning News led to a small custom fabrication order that evolved into a complete OEM manufacturing partnership that lasted for more than 20 years.

In early 2002 a reporter from the Dallas Morning News called GO Industries. He said he wanted to do a story on small business. The story would be about Go industries and would appear in the business section of the paper. In 2002, this was an exciting idea since almost everyone received and read the newspaper (The printed kind – delivered to your door).

A young Bob Orth Jr, a high school senior and newspaper carrier of the year winner in 1977, was more than happy to to accept the offer knowing that a story in the Dallas Morning News was a huge opportunity for free advertising and would likely lead to sales.

A few weeks later, the reporter came out. He spent most of the time talking with Robert Orth and wife, Jeanne (the founders of GO Industries). A month or so later, the article appeared and Robert and Jeanne were honored to have their business featured after being in business for almost 25 years. It was lovely, and people from all over sent copies of the clipping and complemented the Orths. A framed copy of the news paper clipping is still hanging on the wall a GO Industries to this day.

While Bob Jr. was excited for his parents, he was even more excited about the potential flood of new customers that a featured news article could bring.

Within a few weeks, besides the congratulation calls, there were 7 new inquiries. Unfortunately, 6 of them were from insurance salesman who wanted to sell their products. But one inquiry was from a manufacturer’s rep group. He called on GO Industries to help one of his customers locate a source for a small metal bracket. Despite it being a small volume project, the Orths were happy to make the bracket.

The customer, a trailer manufacturer, was so pleased when he received the first 100 brackets that he requested more quotes on other custom parts. Those quotes turned into additional small volume orders. This pattern continued for several years. Although they were a small customer, they were very consistent.

In 2008, the trailer company decided to farm out larger pieces of their metal manufacturing and GO Industries became their major supplier.

By 2013 the trailer company that once sourced 100 brackets became the largest customer of GO Industries and the Orths were OEM manufacturing their entire trailer! This was an unforeseeable outcome in 2002 and a testament to the quality results and experience customers have with GO Industries. This collaboration continued through the COVID era until the customer sold their business. Below are some pictures of all some of the parts GO Industries made for them.
